LAKE WEED CONTROL
WEED CONTROL PROGRAM
Thanks to the dedication, cooperation and hard work of all Chippewa Lake property owners and the Township Board back in 2003, the first Chippewa Lake Weed Control District was formed. The success of those efforts are clearly evident by the greatly improved quality of boating, skiing,
PWC use and fishing in Chippewa Lake.
The current Chippewa Lake Weed Control District is about to expire. Volunteer property owners will be canvassing fellow property owners with petitions, in an effort to extend the program of weed management and control in Chippewa Lake. Petitions will be circulated throughout the spring and early summer months of 2008. The lake weed control information on this site was compiled and posted to inform all property owners about the proposed extension of the Chippewa Lake Weed Control District and to help property owners make an informed decision, when contacted by petition circulators.
Please keep one thing in mind...
Now that the lake seems relatively healthy and with economic times relatively tight for many people, it is tempting to take a "let's wait and see what happens" attitude. There is little doubt regarding what will happen if we do nothing. When the millfoil returns to pre-treatment levels, not only will we suffer from a less enjoyable lake, we will again face the costly first-year task of regaining control of the aquatic plant life. (As shown in the assessment table in the township letter, our first year costs to gain control of the lake were more than the following 3 years of "maintenance" treatment costs combined.)
HOW YOU CAN HELP !
If you are interested in continuing the weed management and control program in Chippewa Lake, there are two ways to help;
#1. SIGN THE PETITION...
First and foremost, we are asking every interested property owner to participate in protecting our beautiful lake by signing the WEED CONTROL DISTRICT PETITION at your earliest convenience. Petitions will be circulated until Labor Day. However, if you are not contacted by a canvasser by the middle of July, please contact one of the following petition circulators to schedule a signing appointment. Summer is always shorter than we’d like and every signature is important.
Jim Slee at (231)867-5617
or Norm Viaches at (517) 281-6272
or via e-mail: singlehrts@comcast.net
#2. BECOME A PETITION CIRCULATOR ...
Anyone who might be interested in helping gather petition signatures in their area of the lake are asked to please contact Jim Slee at 231-867-5617 for more information.
